What is a doula and why do I need one?
“You might be asking yourself, “What is a doula?” It wouldn’t be the first time that question was asked and it won’t be the last. A doula is generally summed up as someone who provides emotional and physical support to the birthing mother, but that definition does not do my profession justice and paints a very vague picture of what I actually do. Yes, I do offer emotional support to my clients, but what does that really look like? When birthing women are faced with so many different decisions (natural birth or medicated birth? Vaginal birth or belly birth? Home birth, birthing center, or hospital birth? To nurse or formula feed? Do I circumcise my son or not?) it’s nice to have someone in your corner offering non biased and non judgmental support. No one knows your baby better than you and no one knows what’s best for your baby better than you.
Sometimes I do physically have to hold clients up during contractions; perform hip squeezes, or bobby pin their bangs out of the way. More importantly I am 100% responsive to their needs. My profession taught me to know what a birthing mother needs sometimes before she even asks. A woman in labor works hard to bring forth her baby and the last thing she needs is to feel unheard, unsafe, and unsupported. I am there holding space for her as well as her partner. When information is coming at you fast or your birth plan changes unexpectedly I am that rock you can lean on to find your footing. When the doctors are speaking a language you don’t understand, I am there to translate.
My goal is to develop a relationship with you, find out what kind of birth you hope to have and to help you meet those goals. You may have read all the books - but sometimes it is nice to have a professional by your side in the middle of the night (or the middle of the day) as questions arise during your pregnancy and during labor.
Postpartum care. Every parent should feel confident in their new role and that is my goal. I can help with newborn and sibling care, pick up your grocery orders, meal prep, provide light housekeeping, help with different techniques to soothe baby, nursing support, or just allow you time for a shower and nap. I’m passionate about getting you the right resources and help to ensure your health and the health of your baby. No matter what you are needing, I want you to feel confident and joyful during your postpartum time.
